Outfest 30th Anniversary: Films That Feed Your Cultural Appetite
by Joseph West on July 16, 2012Outfest 2012 marks the event’s 30th anniversary and is taking place from July 12th till July 22nd, 2012 in Los Angeles. Outfest is filled with films aimed to feed your cultural appetite from documentaries to comedies and romances.
Outfest 30th anniversary is being held in several locations throughout the Los Angeles area. It’s important to know these locations in order to get the most out of Outfest. The locations include:
- The DGA building in West Hollywood
- The Redcat theater in downtown Los Angeles
- The J.A. Ford Theater near the Hollywood Bowl
Opening night began with “VITO”, the documentary about the life of gay rights activist Vito Russo. It left most audience members in tears as they were reminded of the not so glamorous past of the gay culture. Saturday night’s highlights included “Sassy Pants”, a film that had very little to do with gay culture and everything to do with growing up.

That brings us to “Beauty”. Even though the film won the Queer Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, it left most audiences (including myself) lost, with no sense of direction.
Every theater for Outfest was packed for every screening. It was a fun weekend out on the town with lots of talented filmmakers. I am looking forward to seeing:
- Bear City 2, The Proposal
- Struck By Lightning
The Outfest 30th anniversary continues through July 22nd in case you missed any of last weekend’s festivities.
