Exploring Hancock Park: A Charming Small Town in a Big City
by Diana Knox on February 2, 2012Hancock Park is a small town in a big city and is a wonderful place to live. Conveniently located between Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and downtown it is 20 minutes from where you want to be! The houses are spectacular with many homes published in Architectural Digest circa 1920’s and 1930′s.
The neighborhood is made up of several neighborhoods each with its own special characteristics and charm. To the south is Windsor Village, Fremont Place and Brookside. Further a field is Mid Wilshire, Country Club and the Miracle Mile. To the east of Hancock Park “proper” is Windsor Square where Larchmont Village is and St Andrews Square, which is becoming more and more gentrified each and every year. The Northern neighbor is the Paramount Studio where they plan a major renovation over the next couple of years. Beyond Paramount is poor old shabby Hollywood which is always about to come back but never does with the hip and always trendy Hollywood Hills communities up above. Finally to the west is the Fairfax District with Park La Brea, LACMA, the Grove, the Farmers Market on 3rd and Fairfax, the Beverly Center and Beverly Hills, great shopping… I’d say so.
Hancock Park has a perfect lifestyle for all of us urbanites! For the golfers there is the Wilshire Country Club. The Los Angeles Tennis Club is one of my haunts. Hiking in Griffith Park is only a few minutes away. There is also the first Woman’s club, The Ebell that has book clubs, special events and even a monthly Cotillion where the locals send their progeny to try to instill manners and etiquette! Another mainstay is Larchmont Boulevard – this is a street filled with delicious restaurants, charming clothing stores including Joan Picket’s Picket Fences , my favorite bookstore Chevaliers , who go the extra mile to find the book you are looking for, they’re amazing. Landis is the Village Department Store filled with gifts and whatnots a through back to my childhood. Then there’s our son’s favorite Baskin and Robbins 31 Flavors. Chocolate Mint Chip for him if you please. Jamoca Almond Fudge is my weakness
The best thing about all of these places is that everyone will take the time to get to know you and you will soon feel completely at home. Every Sunday morning there is the Larchmont Farmers Market with fresh picked fruits and vegetables, crunchy bread, delicious cheeses and so much more.
Hancock Park has excellent public schools: 3rd Street Elementary between Rossmore and Highland, John Boroughs Middle School on Wilshire Blvd near Highland. The Larchmont Charter Elementary, newly founded, already has a waiting list of a thousand kids. A Charter Middle and High School, in the neighborhood, is very much in the planning stage. Some of the best private schools in the city are located near by, the St. Brendan School (K-8), St James (K–6), the power house Marlborough School for Girls (7-12) and the Page School on Larchmont Blvd (K-8). All of these are within easy walking distance! I love walking my dog to pick up my son Oliver at school bumping into friends, neighbors and other mums and dads on a similar mission.
Check back soon as we intend to host a number of blogs in the next few months to talk about our fabulous neighborhood. What do you love about Hancock Park? What’s your favorite neighborhood in Los Angeles? Please share your ideas and leave your comments below.
