Los Angeles’ Best Sports Bars for Out-of-Town Fans

I am one of those transplants.  Originally from Michigan, I’m one of many who quickly fled the Midwest after college seeking constant sunshine and the hustle and bustle of a big city.  And along with other transplants, I not only brought my belongings with me on my move; I also carried along my sports allegiances.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’ve actually adopted the Dodgers and Clippers as my National League and Western Conference teams, respectively.  And I’d also gladly welcome any Los Angeles-based NFL team with open arms.  But nothing can compete with my Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons.

And now that baseball’s Opening Day is upon us and both basketball and hockey head into the playoffs, being an expatriate of sorts could make it tough to actually watch my hometown teams on the screen.  Luckily for us out-of-towners, Los Angeles has its fair share of sports bars that are more than accommodating:

  • Barney’s Beanery, West Hollywood or Santa Monica. I think they have a million TVs.  No joke.  I was able to watch the Red Wings game and jump over to Top Gun during the intermissions, which was playing on another TV right next to it.  And if you know me, that’s just about pure bliss.
  • Brennan’s, Marina Del Rey. They go above-and-beyond with their improvised stadium-style seating in front of the projection screen for games.  I believe this is a Denver bar, so if you love the Broncos, the Avalanche, and the Rockies, this is the place to be.
  • Sports Harbour, Marina Del Rey. For all those Phillies fans out there still raw about losing the World Series, stop by the Harbour, the resident Philadelphia hangout and you’ll have plenty of people with whom to commisserate.  Unless you’re a die-hard fan, though, you probably won’t find this spot quite to your liking: small TVs and relatively lacking in the way of seating.  Fortunately, they more than make up for it with atmosphere and their newly re-opened kitchen.
  • South, Santa Monica. The official University of Michigan Sports Bar of Los Angeles.  It took over the crown when Hollywood Billiards passed the torch after hosting all University of Michigan football games for years.  Stop by at 9am on a Saturday in September to see UM alumni of all ages rooting on the Maize and Blue.  Plenty of TVs and seating and a quick waitstaff make this venue more than worthwhile.

And, last but not least, the most recent sports bar I frequented where I was able to see both the Red Wings and the Tigers come from behind, making all of us Midwesterners Out West proud:

What teams do you root for and where do you root for them?  I bet every major sports team has a designated bar for their fans here in LA.  Let’s get a whole list of them going in the comments below.

And if you want to venture to the Eastside of town, check out Ye Rustic Inn and Hollywood Billiards.

  2. Dane Findley says:

I’m a born-and-raised Californian myself, but now I’ll know where to send my out-of-town guests with their “imported allegiances!”

  3. Alex Quaid says:

Great call on Sports Harbour. Not necessarily a great place to watch sports games, but the atmosphere is always fun and there are plenty of great sports related games to play there including shuffle board and a basketball shooting game.

  4. Ryan, thanks for all the suggestions. I’m always looking for a cool bar to watch games. One that I didn’t see on your list is The Parlor on Wilshire in Santa Monica. There are seemingly endless flat screens and the food is great.

  5. Awesome post Ryan! I only wish that Americans would appreciate soccer (or football for the rest of the world) more. About Brennan’s i have to say if you haven’t been there on a Thursday when they have their famous turtle races, you have to go. Super atmosphere and a lot of people.

  6. Good call Lauren. The Parlor is a great spot for watching sports. They have over 50 TVs and some great happy hour food & drink specials. The energy for last season’s NBA playoffs was intense. Can’t wait for this weekend when the ‘second season’ begins. Go Lakers!

  7. Ryan, should you decide to ditch the Clipper-nation, us Laker fans would welcome you with open arms. Personally, I like the Santa Monica Barney’s Beanery. Busby’s is a decent place to watch a game, as well.

I just can’t get behind the Lakers. My Pistons have had their number lately – especially in the 2004 playoffs that ended up signalling the dismantling of the Kobe-Shaq era. And I’m not really a Clippers fan. They’re just the team I say I’m a fan of when I have to name LA clubs I dig.
