Cheviot Hills Recreation Center – A Community at Play

394540090_28fc78726fEvery Saturday morning or afternoon in the fall, winter and spring, I find myself sitting on the sidelines of the basketball court or soccer field at the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center off of Pico and Motor. I love Saturday and I realize that much of it has to do with the time spent with my family watching whatever game it might happen to be that season. This season it is all about Little Dribblers basketball and Coach Pitch baseball but next season it could be a different ballgame!

In the middle of a busy city like Los Angeles, to see so much green grass and so many families engaged and at play is truly a wonderful thing. Not only does Cheviot have basketball courts and soccer fields but also a swimming pool, playground, baseball diamonds, an 18-hole golf course, driving range, tennis courts, indoor gym, auditorium, and the list goes on.

The history of the park is pretty interesting as well. On September 15, 1936, American Legion post commander C. D. “Ace” Aseltine launched a drive to establish a huge recreation park on the site of the bankrupt Rancho Country Club, formerly the property of Los Angeles’ famed Ambassador Hotel. The Legionnaires made a case that Los Angeles had not one single large park west of Western Avenue and that Western Los Angeles was entitled to such a place. This plea and plan was supported by the mayor, councilmen, local PTA’s and by 1942, the city began to lease the Rancho Country Club. By 1945, the plans progressed and the Country Club property was transferred from the federal government to the city in exchange for Reeves Field at San Pedro. After years of effort, the private Rancho Country Club became the public Rancho Park Golf Course, and the balance of the land was converted into Cheviot Hills Recreation Center. I love the fact that the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center was created by the strength and vision of a community and it is that same community that benefits today.

Since the summer is fast approaching, I am already online trying to see if I can figure out some classes and camps for my children at Cheviot Hills and I would charge you all to do the same. You can see all of the offerings on line or just head over on Saturday and you will immediately get a sense of all of the great activities that happen there on a daily basis. So grab a ball, a racquet, your swimsuit or all three and head on over to the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center and make a day of it!

I drive by the Penmar Recreation Center on Rose Avenue all the time and always wish I had the time to stop and join in the pick-up football games going on or play a round with the guys who are up at the tee early in the morning. I love all the different places for outdoor activities there are here in LA.
