Reflection: The Last Week of School
I woke up this morning still scrambling for the lunch boxes when I realized that today was officially in my house….the start of summer!
I have 4 children and am spread out at 2 different schools, so today was luxurious with no sandwiches to make and no carpools to drive. I will say, however, that this last week at school was fantastic – it was a time of bonding with friends and teachers and sharing all of the amazing work that has been created over the last 8 months. This week alone I found myself at a Dockweiler beach bonfire with my son’s Kindergarten class, at my daughter’s 5th grade graduation, at a mother-daughter lunch at Back on the Beach and the list goes on.
This year has been an amazing one and despite the budget cuts for LAUSD, Westwood Charter truly rose to the occasion with students, teachers and the community rallying for the cause. As they say, it does take a village and I have to admit that this kind of spirit was in full force this year. School starts later this year (mid September)and I have to say that as much as I love the lazy days of summer (which are actually not lazy at all), I will miss that walk to school and connection with all of those wonderful friendly faces that I know.
This year meant so much to me as I had one child graduate and one child begin his journey at Westwood Charter. I know that my daughter is overly prepared for her next chapter in middle school and I feel that the Westwood teachers and community have given her the cornerstones for great success. The success of this year made me think about John Wooden and his pyramid of success. I have this pyramid printed out on my fridge at home and it also sits at my desk at work. I thank all of the amazing teachers and our fabulous community for helping build the foundation and cornerstones that make up the pyramid success for our children…have a great summer to all of you!
